Sport. Rugby in TashkentFor the first time people began to speak about rugby in Uzbekistan already in 1969. However the game did not "settle down". In November of 2001 a Rugby Federation was formed in Uzbekistan. In 2002 the first appearance of the female team "Sogdiana" took place on an international level. The girls took the 10th place among 12 teams at that time. This year they took 6th place. Their coach is Oleg Galkin. In October the Championship of Uzbekistan took place where teams from Tashkent, Chirchik, Yangiyor and other cities participated. In this way the teams prepare for the unofficial world championship in Hong-Kong.
On the invitation of Mr. Philippe Lamadieu we have been on the training game of "Aviator" team versus "Westminster International University" team. Mr. Alan France, the deputy rector of the University, Mr. Philippe Lamadieu, the General Manager of Le Meridien Tashkent Hotel and Mr. Rory Cross, teacher of the University formed the backbone of the team.
The University team lost to "Aviator" team but there is nothing to be ashamed of - "Aviator" are in training for the fourth year already.
You can also be a part of the "International" team irrespective of your age. Come every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00pm and Sunday at 11:00am to the Tashkent Military Academy (near the Pushkin square). You can contact Mr. Alan France for additional information. |

Understanding little of the rules of this game we nevertheless watched the field with interest. There were many critical moments - brawls, fights for ball, successful takeovers of the opponent, slashed eyebrows, contused legs, red and sweaty faces. And, of course, the indescribable pleasure of playing! "This is like after having a good sex", - said Alan France after the game.
